That hard-earned travel budget of yours will take you the extra mile (and more), if you know how to wisely spend it.

While exploring the world with your family and friends will always be a blast, taking time to travel alone is a gift that you should treat yourself to from time to time. Fact: Solo travel will teach you so many things about life, and more importantly, about yourself. So you really better make every moment count. How, you ask? Here are three foolproof tips to make sure your money and those leave credits don’t go to waste.

1. Go out of your comfort zone.

Cliché as it sounds, chart unknown territory. Research new places that offer the same fun experience as more mainstream destinations. For instance, so many people go to Seminyak and Ubud in Bali — why not go on a thrilling hike up Mount Ijen, a volcano with blazing blue fire? Or check out “The Maldives of Bali,” Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan, Penida.

2. Have a backpacker mindset.

You might want to look good for those OOTDs, but packing like backpackers do will make your life so much easier. Avoid bringing too many items; denim and dark-colored pieces are low-maintenance so you can reuse them, but also have lighter pieces so your luggage won’t be bulky. Bring practical shoes as well, unless of course you’re planning on going somewhere that requires formal clothing.

3. Try themed days.

In your one week in Jeju Island, for instance, compartmentalize your activities: One day will be all for beach hopping, one day for food tripping (this one you really have to gear yourself up for — pacing is key), another day just to check out the spas. It’s a cool twist on the usual itinerary, and the themed photos will look really good in your travel journal.
